I have a friend (Very Good Friend) who hates what I do, thinks that I violate privacy and has repeatedly argued with me about the Artistic Merit of Candid Photography. That said a year or so ago he brought me Cartier-Bresson’s Propos de Paris, a very fine gift and one that sits pride of place on my bookshelf.
The fact is I like shooting a vision of the world, unique to me, the places I go and the people I see. Actually the people that reside in a place are far more interesting to me than the place itself.

Bumped into a guy shooting a model the other day in a phone box, didn’t ask why, did ask if I could borrow his model for a few hours, he gave me a sideways glance and declined. Maybe his girlfriend!

Street Confrontation. (But not by these two ladies, So as not to confuse).
The other day, I am shooting away (Flash) in the bus station, completely approachable, when a woman stops me demanding to know why I am taking photos without first asking permission (I know, same ole story). I do the usual and explain, politely of course, that to ask would be to lose the moment that drew me to the subject in the first place. She clearly didn’t listen and went on to ask the same question and went further trying to preach her ethical values of politeness to me.
Now by this time I have been stood here a few minutes trying to be polite but unfortunately for her politeness isn’t my strong suit. I explain that she is wasting her time and isn’t going to impart her views on me, again this doesn’t deter. Look lady I really couldn’t give a CRAP what you think, I am here doing what I do sometimes I ask sometimes I don’t get over it. At this point I apologise as I can see that this isn’t the outcome she was hoping for and she looked a little taken back that I am not shrinking before her very eyes. I again tell her that I appreciate her opinion but again make it clear that I will now continue shooting, I gave her my card and continued to shoot.
The funny thing is I didn’t even take her picture.
